Fall Festival on Wednesday

Mrs. Rivera's Phosphorescent 5th Graders are having a Fall Festival and we need your help! They will be playing a game, doing a craft and enjoying a treat. If you are available to help on October 31st from 12:45 to 3:00pm we would love to have you. We need some supplies so if you can't make it and would love to donate something that would be great too! Please donate Ramen Noodles for the Food Drive!

Thank you so much to the families who have contributed to the 6th grade food drive! We really want to win a pizza party! If you have not yet contributed, we have decided as a class the least expensive thing to donate from the list is ramen noodles, and if we each bring in 10 packages for approximately .10 each we can all spend one dollar and have 200 items for our class! Portfolios :)

I wanted to clarify a few things for parents. As an upperclassman in Good Foundations Academy, your scholar is accumulating their work for a portfolio which we are compiling as the year progresses. That means that they will not have completed work going home. They keep their work in class inside their portfolio. If you would like to see the quality of their work I can make copies and send them home to you. Another option is to come in to our class and look at their portfolios. I am usually in my classroom until 4:30-5:00 every day. I hope that helps!

Parent University!

I am thrilled to announce our Parent University!
This Parent University will focus on Singapore Math!
It will be held on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2012 from 7:00pm-8:00pm
Preschool-age and GFA students are invite to join us for a PAJAMA PARTY in the Music Room while you learn!
Parent University is a class that explains specific learning methods in our curriculum. These classes are held four times a year, and are designed to help PARENTS understand strategies and learning styles that are exclusive to our program. This can help parents understand what is being taught and will allow a richer understanding of how to help with our rigorous math concepts. :)

Zoo Field Trip!!

Our field trip is TOMORROW to the Hogle Zoo! Our trip will be from 8:00 ( We plan to leave at 8:15) to 3:00!
We have two parents agree to chaperone and drive. If any of you would like to still come, please do! We love chaperones!!! Students MUST wear uniform, bring a lunch(or money for a lunch), and money for spending if they would like to buy a drink, or something from the gift shop.
:) We are studying classification! Ask your student about the Carl Linnaeus song.

Book Report Choices!

Students may pick ONE of the following for a book report.
(Our next book report is due October 22nd!)

Please remember, all text on your documents (posters, dictionaries, etc) must be typed or done with a stencil. If you need to borrow from the suite, please ask. No free hand work! You may not repeat a project you have already done.

1.Do a costumed presentation of your book. Dress either as the author or one of the characters. Your presentation must be at least 3 minutes.
2. Write a letter from one character to another character.  For presentation you will read it to the class and explain its importance; 3 minutes.
3.Write the first paragraph(or two) for a sequel. Outline what would happen in the rest of the book. Present with the summary of the book and your sequel idea; 3 minutes.
4.If a journey was involved, draw a map with explanatory notes of significant places; present to the class and explain; 3 minutes.
5. Cut out magazine pictures to make a collage or a poster illustration the main idea of the book. Present to the class; 3 minutes.
6.Write a book review for the class blog.  Read it to the class and present it; 3 minutes.
7.Draw a comic-book page complete with bubble -style conversations showing an incident in your book. Present what happened before and after in your oral presentation to the class; 3 minutes.
8. Make a poster advertising your book; for presentation explain why you chose what you did for your illustrations, and the significance to the book. Must be in a standard sized poster board.
9.Dress up as one of the characters and tell the story from a first person point of view; 3 minutes.
10.Make a dictionary containing 20 or more difficult words form the book.  The dictionary must be decorated and neatly presented, all typed, and in alphabetical order.  Be sure to include a sample sentence for each dictionary word. Choose some for your presentation, explain why they are significant words; 3 minutes.
11. Make a mobile showing pictures or symbols of happenings in your book.
For presentation be able to walk us through the symbols for the plot of the story; 3 minutes.
12.Make a "wanted" poster for one of the characters or objects of your book. Include the following:  Include the following: (a) a drawing or cut out picture of the character or object, (b) a physical description of the character or object, (c) the character's or object's misdeeds (or deeds?), (d) other information about the character or object which is important, (e) the reward offered for the capture of the character or object. For presentation you must tell us why this person is wanted and how it related to the novel you have read; 3 minutes.
13.Design a movie poster for the book you read. Cast the major character in the book with real actors and actresses. Include a scene or dialogue form the book in the layout of the poster.  Remember, it should be PERSUASIVE; you want people to come see the movie. Be ready to " sell" the book for your presentation; 3 minutes.
14.If the book you read involves a number of locations within a country or geographical area, plot the events of the story on a map. Make sure the map is large enough for us to read the main events clearly. Attach a legend to your map. Write a paragraph that explains the importance of each event indicated on the map. Be prepared to explain it to the class; 3 minutes.
15.Complete a series of five drawings that show five of the major events int he plot of the book you read. Write captions for each drawing so that the illustrations can be understood by someone who did not read the book. For presentation be ready to explain each section of the book; 3 minutes.
16.Select one character form the book you read who has the qualities of a heroine or hero. List these qualities  and tell why you think they are heroic. Prepare a poster for your hero on a standard poster board. Present to the class why this character is a true hero; 3 minutes.
17.You are a prosecuting attorney putting one of the characters form the book you read on trial for a crime or misdeed.Prepare your case on paper, giving all your arguments. State your arguments for what this character needs to be accused of and why; 3 minutes.
18.Make a time line of the major events in the book you read. Be sure the divisions on the time line reflect the time period in the plot. Use drawings or magazine cutouts to illustrate events along the time line. Be prepared to present to the class form beginning to end; 3 minutes.
19.Make a paper doll likeness of one of the characters in the book you read. Design at least three costumes for this character, the historical period and events in the book. For presentation explain your characters and their outfits and how they fit into the book; 3 minutes.

Staying in from Recess

We all know that life can be hectic, and occasionally our scholars forget things.  However, homework is something that is essential to the pace and rigor of our classroom. Homework is checked at the beginning of every school day. If a scholar is found without their homework, for whatever reason, they will be staying in from their first recess. I will also be contacting parents, via email, so we can all be on the same page. Students who forget/did not do homework will be staying in from recess. Lunch recess may also be a possible makeup homework opportunity for some. Scholars write their excuses at the bottom of their planners for the day they forgot a signature or homework. This helps parents know what excuse is being communicated to me. When they stay in from recess, we do it with the understanding that it is for the greater good. I call this a love consequence. :) I love them, and so I must have their homework completed. Tough. Love. Works. :) Thank you for your continued assistance!
